Hi all! It's almost time to start submitting those CSS (Cervine Secret Santa) entries! :D Please remember to submit your finished entries (starting Dec. 10th, and ending Dec. 24th) to the "TDC Contests and CSS Entries" folder, and also to note =KateHallen with a link to your image so that she can keep track of who all has participated. :)

Also, on an unrelated note, since there has been quite a bit of confusion regarding "The Antler Issue", I just wanted to clarify what we all accept here in the form of deer "headgear". :) Antlers of any kind are of course allowed, and that includes "fantasy" antlers, like tree branches, human hands, and any other things that resemble antlers. Feathers, masks and other "fancy" adornments are also allowed, so long as they don't look like or can in any way be confused with the horns of antelope, goats, sheep or cattle. Even if the body is a deer (such as with a TEF char), if it has the horns of an antelope, goat, sheep or cow--even on a skull mask--it will be declined. The only exceptions we make to this rule is for deer that naturally have "spike"-type antlers, such as juvenile elk and fallow deer, brocket deer, pudu, etc. Their spikes are distinguished from those of antelope because they lack the growth ridges/rings that antelope, goat and sheep all have on their horns (since their horns keep on growing and never shed, as antlers do).

Unicorn and kirin horns are also an exception to the general rule, so long as it is either a single antler (though some kirins have two antlers), or a spiraled horn like a narwhal's tusk. If the horn looks too much like an antelope or goat's horn (having bumpy growth ridges), it will be declined. Also, the unicorn or kirin MUST have the body and head-shape of a deer and not a of horse, of course (nor goat or antelope). :) As for fauns, satyrs and taurs, the same rules apply: if they have goat or sheep horns instead of antlers, they will be declined, even if they have the legs or body of a deer. We only accept antlered humanoids (and other non-deer creatures), if they are to have horns at all*. Non-antlered doe women are also accepted here so long as they have other recognizable bodily attributes of deer (deer hooves, deer ears, fawn spots, deer tail, etc.). Hope all that clears things up a bit! If you have any questions, please just ask! :)

*Edit: Please see our new poll regarding this issue: [link] If the poll ends in favor of these no longer being allowed, then we will no longer be accepting antlered humanoids and creatures that have no other deer aspects than antlers.

What if we're not good at drawing deer bodies yet and it accidently looks more like a cow or other equine-type critter but with cloved hooves or hidden hooves?

Hehe, I figured it was just easier to make a journal post about it than to keep trying to explain it to folks over and over. From now on, you can just point them to this post whenever you need to explain why you had to decline their image. :)

An antelope is more related to cattle then deer. So no, they do not count as a Deer.

Deer can be defined as having antlers, a bone type structure, often with multiple points that sheds and regrows once a year. If they have horns, which are made of keratin and not bone, they grow continuously throughout the animals life. This includes the animals as above.

So, although they may look more like a deer, they are not classified as them.
